What is biotensegrity?
Next time you see a cat waking up from a nap, watch closely. You’ll see that the cat is not merely stretching out, but going through a series of movements: a process of contraction, lengthening, and releasing. This is called pandiculation or unwinding. The combination of these opposing motions is the essence of biotensegrity.
What is biotensegrity? The word tensegrity is a blend of the words ‘tensile’ and ‘integrity.’ It refers to the balancing of the forces of tension and compression to create strength and stability. The philosophy is that when tension and compression are in integrity, the body is in balance and our energy can be used optimally and efficiently. Ideally, this looks like smooth, controlled, and efficient movement.
The goal is to balance these opposing forces (tension and compression) and take advantage of their different qualities to enable us to enjoy freedom of movement, reduce pain, regulate emotions, and optimize our energy.
About this course:
In the first, foundational course Fascia and the Nervous System - Level 1, we discussed amongst many other subjects, Polyvagal theory and the Window of Tolerance as an appropriateness model, we explored fascia as our largest sensory organ and considered the fundamental principles of biotensegrity.
This new course has been designed as a shorter module to complement and build on from what we learned in the Fascia and the Nervous system course.
Through a combination of live lectures and experiential practices you will learn how to apply the concept of biotensegrity to alleviate chronic pain, discomfort and restrictions in movement. We'll also widen the scope and explore how these principles can support us to trust our own bodies and strengthen our relationship with others.
This course is for you if you are:
- Struggling with persistent pain, tension, or regular discomfort and want to learn effective ways to move with fluidity and pleasure.
- A yoga teacher looking to incorporate myofascial work, non-violence and a trauma-informed environment into classes, trainings, or retreats.
- A movement educator or facilitator working with clients experiencing persistent pain conditions.
Please note, to join this Level 2 course, you need to have completed Fascia and the Nervous System - Level 1.
